About the SLA
Executive Committee & Working Groups
The SLA is currently led by an Executive Committee made up of business, academic, NGO, professional institute and government agency representation. NatureScot, the Scottish Government’s lead statutory body for landscape have observer status on the Executive Committee and actively engage. The Executive Committee operate under Terms of Reference
One of the SLA’s primary roles is to convene Scotland’s Landscape Community of interest which spans a broad range of organisations and individuals across urban design, protected scenic areas, biodiversity, economic regeneration, health and wellbeing and social justice.
The Working Groups are governed by Terms of Reference, are generally time limited and can comprise 10-15 individuals with a Chair from the Executive Committee.

2026: Working Group – Developing an Action Plan for the Charter – Ongoing
Previous Working Groups
2024- 2025: Working Group established to develop a new Scotland’s Landscape Charter that was published in June 2025 and endorsed by the Scottish Government and its key agencies – Nature Scot, Historic Environment Scotland, Scottish Land Commission and Architecture and Design Scotland.
2021: 4 working groups established to develop clear recommendations and an agreed SLA response to four upcoming landscape and place policy opportunities
- 30 by 30 Targets – what does this mean for Scotland’s protected areas and the integration of landscape and biodiversity whilst tackling climate change?
- Responding to the Social Renewable Advisory Board’s Report “If not now, when?” – how landscape can help address the issues of inequality and exclusion faced by those in our deprived communities/sectors through access to locally available, quality greenspace and green infrastructure for climate adaptation, health and wellbeing, recreation, learning, play, food growing and community cohesion.
- The Draft Climate Action Plan and the Just Transition Commission’s Report – developing an approach to large scale landscape change to meet the future pressures from agriculture, renewables and forestry and to support related rural employment– the approach to large scale landscape change from agriculture, renewables and forestry.
- The Environment Strategy – developing landscape indicators to link to the Strategy Vision as well as our National Outcomes and the UNSDG

The SLA will be open to any organisation or individual who commits to contributing to its aims or work. Ideally membership will span public, voluntary, community and private sector bodies.
