Scotland’s Landscape Charter

The need for an updated charter

In 2009, Scotland’s landscape community came together to create the first Landscape Charter, confirming strong support for the European Landscape Convention. 20 years on from its first publication and in recognition of the significant changes needed to address the climate and nature emergencies we face, a review of the charter was led by a diverse range of organisations and individuals, coordinated by Scotland’s Landscape Alliance.

This updated charter reflects the increasing dependence and high value that continues to be placed on landscape in Scotland. It demonstrates a commitment to sensitively managing the landscape change needed in line with the principles of the European Landscape Convention to continue to shape our future landscape ambitions through collaborative action.

This revised statement has been endorsed by NatureScot and the Scottish Government.
